This is similar to the DC39 origin, only this is slightly less powerful at 275 air watts compared to the 280 air watts of the DC39 origin but this comes with the tangle free tool that would cost $70 when purchased separately.
At a little less than $700, this full-sized canister is one of the most expensive ones in the market.
But if you compare it to the DC65 upright, it still has more 30 air watts more suction power than the 245 air watts in the DC65.

What to expect from the Dyson DC39 Animal?
Like what I’ve said in the intro this is very similar to the DC39 origin. It has the same dirt cup capacity, same floor tool and attachments, same reach, etc.
Tangle free turbine tool
The biggest difference is the addition of the tangle-free turbine tool that Dyson claims will pick up pet hair minus the head headaches of cutting hair off a brush roll hence the term “tangle-free”.
Surprisingly this has a slightly less suction at 275 air watts compared to the 280 air watts of the origin.
More power than a Dyson upright
But take note that it is still powerful, around 30 air watts more than the Dyson DC65. To put this in perspective, the difference is the same as the power of a Dyson V6 cordless in default mode.
No motorized brush
Take note that the beater bar does not have its own motor so agitation won’t be as good.
It’s both good and bad.
Good because you don’t have to worry about replacing belts. And bad because it isn’t as strong as models with dedicated motors on the floor tool which means less deep cleaning power.
Dyson cyclone technology
All Dyson vacuums use their cyclone technology that works really efficiently at keeping microscopic dust from the fibers. This ensures great performance even if the bin is filling up.
Ball technology
To help this canister turn on a dime, it has the ball technology. This is the large gray ball at the back of the vacuum. Underneath it are a number of wheels that help it turn without the vacuum tipping over.

QVC features the DC39 but take note that the attachments won’t be the same as you’ll get in Amazon. If you buy this in QVC, you’ll get the flat out tool and the soft dusting brush whereas in Amazon you’ll get the tangle-free turbine brush. They also have a cool demonstration which is the main reason why I shared this video.
Cord Length
Power cord is 21.7 feet long which is a bit short but it comes with cord rewind. The 5-foot hose and 4-foot wand do make up for this.

Bare Floor Performance
This will be effective on bare floor because it gives consumers the option to turn off the beater bar and only use suction to pick up debris.
It will work best on fine debris the dust, fine sand or coffee grounds. Because of the low profile there will be a plowing effect if you try to use this on larger bits of debris like crushed chips or cheerios.
For larger bits of dirt, take off the floor tool and just use the wand or crevice tool.

Carpet Performance
Even though this is equipped with a beater bar, it isn’t powered by its own motor.
Instead it uses air to spin it.
How does it affect the performance?
Well, it won’t be as effective as vacuums equipped with a dedicated motor to drive the brush.
It won’t have the same deep cleaning performance as other brands like the ProLux stealth and Electrolux UltraActive.
Take note however that this vacuum really has strong suction. And this will be able to make up for the lack of a motorized beater bar.
It certainly is capable of pick up large bits of debris using the crevice tool without any problems.
I said using a crevice tool because the front of the nozzle sits very low on the floor and creates a snow plowing effect when you use it to clean larger bits of dirt.
Upholstery Performance
This particular version does not include the mini tool with a beater bar instead it comes with the tangle-free turbine tool that does this…
This is pretty cool if you ask me and if you buy this it’ll cost $70 in Amazon.
This will be pretty handy if you have pets at home or if your wife, sister or daughter that have long hair which can be a nightmare to clean with a standard beater bar.
Pet Hair Removal
This canister vacuum is capable of cleaning pet hair on both carpet and upholstery thanks to the main cleaning head and tangle-free turbine tool.
But here’s the caveat, it won’t do as well on carpet as it would on upholstery because it does not have a motorized brush.
The roller brush in this variant does not have its own motor. It only relies on air to spin. This may not matter on low pile carpet but it’ll struggle on anything thicker.
Don’t expect this to deep clean carpet because it lacks agitation.
On upholstery, pet cleaning will be outstanding thanks to the tangle-free turbine tool.
It uses two counter rotating brushes that pull up and suck it pet hair.
This design reduces the amount of pet hair getting tangled, making maintenance much easier.
It isn’t as maintenance free as Dyson markets it but it won’t be as much as a tool with a beater bar.

What consumers say?
Many folks who bought this vacuum have several pets and most were happy with the results. They say that the tangle-free turbine tool works great at cleaning pet hair minus the tangles.
However it isn’t as maintenance free as Dyson claims it to be. You’ll still need to check the counter rotating gears from time to time if there is hair or debris inside.
Suction is great but the roller brush does not come with its own motor so agitation isn’t as good.
Won’t do well on plush carpet
While it did pick up a whole lot of surface dirt, it did struggle digging down and deep cleaning carpet.
Some folks also complained about the snow plowing effect, the need to remove the floor tool just to clean large bits of debris.
The floor tool is light which is good because it is easy to move around but also bad since you need to exert more effort to push it down on carpet for it to deep clean which it already struggles to do.
Bin is messy to clean
Other complaints include how messy is to empty the bin, especially if there is a lot of pet hair and dust bunnies because of the static.
You may need to use your fingers but if you have a large bin, just place the dirt cup inside then open the cover and shake the dust cup so you don’t need to use your fingers.
Other issues
There were also complaints about the suction being too strong that it was hard to push on carpet but if you look at the video reviews that does not seem to be a problem.
If you look at the handle there is a lever that you pull to lessen the suction, you can use this to clean more delicate stuff like lamp shades or curtains.
Despite all the complaints, a majority of consumers loved how this canister performed.
It was lightweight, easy to maneuver (especially under furniture), had strong suction and great in removing pet hair. The price is a bit steep but according it is an investment.

To wrap up
This is a great option for pet owners looking for a vacuum that’ll help them clean pet hair thanks to the tangle-free tool.
However the main cleaning head’s performance will not be as good as the upright because it lacks a motorized brush. The tangle-free turbine tool makes up for this limitation on areas like upholstery or stairs.
You can even use that tool on the floor if you feel that the floor tool is inadequate.
The biggest downside is the price at just under $700. You’ll get a lot for $700 like the 275 air watt motor capable of picking up a lot of dust at least on bare floor.
Dyson also put the same ball technology found in their uprights in this canister vacuum. This feature allows it great maneuverability around furniture.
Also engineers at Dyson have reinforced the hose making it robust enough to withstand all the pulling throughout its lifespan.
