Hoover Platinum Collection UH30010COM Review: Two Products in One

When shopping for a full sized vacuum you have to choose one type over another. You either pick a canister or upright.

The Platinum UH30010COM from Hoover changes all that because it literally is two products in one package.

It comes with a full sized upright capable of deep cleaning carpets and a canister vacuum to clean everything else.

This is a bagged vacuum so almost 100% of allergens is trapped inside. So it is a great option for folks with respiratory conditions like asthma.

Plus the bags aren’t very expensive – a pack of 2 will cost just under $10.

This is just a little investment you make for your health.

The canister part is also bagged.

Let’s see what else is in store for people who buy this upright and canister cleaner and what to expect.

A quick look at the features

  • Uses Hoover’s patented Windtunnel technology to deep clean carpet
  • Utilizes a sealed bagged system with HEPA filtration that keeps 99.97% of allergens inside the bag
  • Fingertip controls
  • Upright uses a 5 amp motor
  • Canister comes with a 5 foot flexible hose, telescopic wand, crevice tool, brush tool and floor tool
  • No scuff bumper (for the upright)
  • LED headlights (for the upright)
  • Auto height adjustment (for the upright)
  • 5 year warranty

Pros

  • Uses a sealed bagged system meaning everything sucks in that includes dust, allergens and dust mites stay inside the bag
  • Great for people who suffer from asthma or any respiratory ailment
  • The upright vacuum weighs only 11 pounds
  • Spare bags aren’t very expensive (less than $10 for a pack of two for the upright, less than $7 for the canister)
  • Long power cord
  • Comes with a canister cleaner that allows you to clean above the floor areas
  • Great suction and deep cleaning ability on carpet
  • Uses HEPA filters which keeps most of the allergens inside the bag
  • Handle controls is convenient to use
  • Long 5 year warranty

Cons

  • No cord rewind
  • Floor tool on the canister does not have any motorized brush so it’s not usable on thick carpet
  • Noisy
  • Upright does not have any brush roll on/off so it’s not ideal for bare floor
  • Carry on strap does not have any padding

What to expect from the Hoover Platinum Collection?

When you buy this you’ll get two products out of the box. First a lightweight upright bagged vacuum that weighs just 11 pounds.

It’s as light as a cordless stick vacuum but it has a cord so suction shouldn’t be an issue.

Second product is a canister that allows you to clean above floors.

It comes with 3 attachments – a crevice, brush and floor tool.

The main floor tool does not have any motorized brush so it won’t be as efficient on carpet. This tool is suited for bare floor.

Features

A great feature for the upright is the fingertip controls that you normally don’t find in these types of vacuum cleaners.

Mostly uprights use a foot control located on back of the floor tool where you use your foot to push to turn on or off. Foot controls aren’t hard to use but it can be a nuisance for some people.

Attachments and Accessories

The canister comes in with four – crevice, brush and floor tool plus a 5 foot flexible hose.

Cord Length

The power cord of the upright is 35 feet long while the canister’s power cord is around 25 feet long. Both don’t have any cord rewind so you’ll have to manually tidy it up after you use it – this is the downside of a lightweight vacuum.

Filter Clean up

Since both use bags there will be no filters to clean up. You’ll only need to replace the bags.

Warranty

Hoover backs this up with a 5 year warranty.

Bare Floor Performance

While the WindTunnel sytem is great for carpet, you cannot turn off the motorized brush.

This is a big concern for me because it can scratch the hard surfaces. A big no-no for homes with expensive hardwood or linoleum flooring though Hoover claims that the brush does not actually touch the floor.

In terms of pure cleaning power, it is great on bare floor surfaces and will pick up almost everything that will fit through the inlet.

The canister part also has a floor tool and it has a brush underneath it which is great if the area you are cleaning is dusty.

It’ll be great for tiles especially cleaning the grooves. This will do the job cleaning these areas up.

Carpet Performance

This is where the WindTunnel system shines – it is capable of deep cleaning carpet with the combination of the strong suction from the 5 amp motor and the motorized brush. Reviews have confirmed this with close to a thousand consumers in Amazon satisfied with its performance on carpet.

The great part about this is it does not weigh a ton – only 11 pounds so moving this around should not be a problem. It does not have any self-propelling feature so there will be some resistance when you push or pull it on plush carpet.

Don’t worry about the bags filling up fast because these are huge. And it’ll last at least a few months depending on how big your home is.

Upholstery Performance

This is where the canister comes in handy. You can use either the crevice and brush tool to cleanup dust and loose debris on upholstery.

Take note that this does not come with a pet hair tool so you’ll need to use the brush tool to clean up pet hair.

Pet Hair Removal

The upright will do very well in cleaning up pet hair on both bare floor and carpet because it has very good suction and a motorized brush.

Don’t forget to clean the motorized brush after every 2 to 3 uses so performance does not suffer.

The canister does not come with a pet hair tool attachment so you’ll need to use the brush tool for that on upholstery.

Customer Reviews

Over 1,600 consumers left a review in Amazon alone and a majority of them gave it 5 stars because of the great performance particularly on carpet.

Great on carpet

The upright will perform its best on carpet with consumers saying that it picks up everything even in plush carpet from pet hair to sand.

One reviewer even mentioned that when he cleans his carpets with a carpet cleaner he does not need to change the water as often (only 2 to 3 times) before it becomes clear.

No brush roll on/off feature

Since you cannot shut down the motorized brush there is some concern on whether or not this will scratch bare floor surfaces. But consumers say that the brush roll does not touch the floor so it will not scratch it.

May scatter large debris

Another concern with this is if when you clean larger debris like crackers or cheerios, the brush will have a tendency to throw these types of debris all over the place making it harder to clean up.

One work around for this is to use the canister with the crevice tool to clean these types of debris.

B rating from Good Housekeeping

Good Housekeeping gave it a B+ rating saying while it does well on picking up embedded dirt on carpet it had poor bare floor cleaning performance.

Consumers also liked how the HEPA filter and the bag keeps almost all of the allergens inside the vacuum. There were some complaints though about the smell.

But Hoover says that you will need to air dry the upright with the fabric bag open because in humid areas molds tend to build up inside.

Don’t forget to vacuum the inside of the fabric bag as part of the maintenance.

The upright also received some love from older folks because of its lightness. And despite that, it still performs well compared to brands like Oreck.

Even though consumers say that they’re able to use this on stairs, it’s bulk may be an issue if you try.

A lot of consumers also loved that it came with a canister vacuum because it allowed them to clean above the floor areas. The shoulder strap was a nice addition because it freed up their hands. Though it was noisy, it still did its job.

Some issues

There were also complaints about the bag of the canister vacuum being too small and filling up too quickly.

Also it is important to note that if you’re cleaning small area rugs, you’d be better off using the canister part because the upright’s suction is too strong for these types of rugs.

Overall most of the consumers who gave this a high rating had carpet flooring and needed something light to deep clean carpet.

The auto height adjustment means you don’t need to bend down and turn a knob or flick a switch. Just let the vacuum do all the work. For the price, you’ll get two good products which is good value for money in my opinion.

Where can I buy this?

You can buy this upright vacuum in Amazon for less than $245. And it’ll be eligible for their 2-day free shipping if you join Prime.

Amazon also sells extended warranties of up to 3 years if you want that extra peace of mind.

To wrap up

This is a great product to have if your home has mostly carpet flooring because this is where the WindTunnel system performs best.

The upright has a 35 foot power cord so that means this would be useful even in large homes.

Like with most uprights, it will struggle cleaning stairs because of its sheer bulk.

But that’s where the canister comes in but the lack of a motorized tool in it limits its cleaning performance on carpeted stairs.

Also I’d like to remind you that the motorized brush roll cannot be turned off. So if you have expensive hardwood or linoleum flooring inside your home, I would not recommend this for you.

A Shark Rotator Lift-Away would be better suited for this because it has a brush roll on/off switch.

If you’re older and looking for a lightweight upright give this a look because it only weighs in at 11 pounds – pretty light for an upright, no it does not swivel like a Dyson.

But it’s cheaper, around 50% cheaper and still comes with a 5 year warranty which is very important.
