I tested the Dyson V9’s runtime at the nozzle and with a non-powered tool, while the Gen5 Detect was tested using the standard laser cleaner head on both hard floors and carpet. Here are the results.
The Dyson Gen5 Detect is the clear winner in runtime. In its lowest power setting, it delivers more than double the runtime of the Dyson V9 Motorbar, even with the Laser Slim Fluffy roller attached.
In testing, the Gen5 Detect ran just over 80 minutes on hard floors with the laser roller, while the V9 topped out at a little over 48 minutes.
In the mid or Auto setting, the Gen5 Detect still managed over 46 minutes on hard floors. That runtime dropped to around 22 minutes on carpet, as the vacuum automatically increased power when higher dirt levels were detected.
By comparison, the V9 delivered between 24 and 29 minutes, depending on nozzle configuration. In Max mode, the Gen5 Detect again pulled away, delivering roughly double the output and runtime performance of the V9 regardless of setup.
Airflow Comparison
The Dyson Gen5 Detect produces significantly more airflow than the Dyson V9 Motorbar across all power settings. In testing, airflow at the wand was 25% to 48% higher, while airflow at the nozzle measured 22% to 49% higher, depending on the power mode. Despite the large airflow advantage, surface-level cleaning results were very close between the two models, with pickup differences of only a few percentage points.
Which Option Is Better On Hard Floors?
While overall pickup scores were close, the Dyson Gen5 Detect still holds an advantage due to its greater efficiency on hard floors with the Laser Slim Fluffy roller.
Another benefit of the Gen5 Detect is its bright green laser, which reveals fine dust that’s otherwise difficult to see. The Dyson V9 Motorbar’s Motorbar nozzle lacks any illumination, making it harder to track remaining debris visually.
Although the V9 picked up slightly more sand on this surface, it required running at mid to max power to achieve it. The Gen5 Detect achieved a comparable pickup percentage on its lowest power setting, enabling longer runtime and reducing battery strain.
In the edge cleaning test, both were efficient at picking up debris in this area, but again, the Gen5 Detect was more efficient, picking up more with fewer passes and using the lowest power setting.
