Bissell has been very busy launching new products. Their primary focus right now has been the “Pet Hair Eraser” series.
A few weeks back, I reviewed the second-generation cordless pet hair eraser, and today we’ll be looking at the upright.
The “Pet Hair Eraser” line of products targets pet owners looking for products that’ll clean up pet hair.
Let’s have a close look at the new Bissell 1650A Pet Hair Eraser Upright.
A Great Upright Option For Pet Owners
Bissell 1650A Pet Hair Eraser Upright Review
The 1650 Pet Hair Eraser is the upright version of the handheld 1782. It’s one of the most effective options available right now for those looking for an upright that can clean pet hair. Bissell’s anti-tangle system is quite useful. Tests and consumer reviews prove that this product can pick up pet hair on hard floors and carpet. Being a Bissell, you won’t need to spend a premium, so it’s something that budget-conscious shoppers should consider.
It’s got a diverse toolset that includes an air-powered mini turbo brush, and a two-in-one brush attachment for cleaning areas above floors. So these additions give this upright some versatility.
Has a great new feature
This upright has a feature called the “Tangle-free brush roll” that prevents hair from wrapping up on the motorized brush. You won’t need a scissor to untangle hair wrapped on it.
If your wife or daughter has long hair, you don’t have to worry about the tedious task of removing hair from the brush roll.
Separates dirt from hair
Another feature worth mentioning is the “Cyclonic Pet Hair Spooling System” that separates hair from dirt, spooling them together, so it’s easier to empty.
The term spooling means clumping them up together to increase density and weight, so when you open the bin, gravity pulls it down, and you don’t have to use your fingers to pull it out.
Unfortunately, this upright weighs 18 pounds, but it will still do the job.
Please scroll down to see how this vacuum performs and other relevant information that will help you with your decision.

What to expect from this upright pet hair eraser?
If you have lots of carpet and pets at home, then this upright as a great option if you don’t want something with a bag.
It’s got a very decent 8.5 amp motor, which equates to a great suction. And it’s got stiff bristles and a fat and wide motorized brush that’s over 12″ wide.
A stiff-bristled as a need when dealing with pet hair on carpets.
Tangle-Free Brush Roll
One of the biggest headaches when cleaning pet hair would be the aftermath. That is cleaning the brush roll.
If a vacuum has less suction or a thin brush, the hair will wrap around it. And it’ll be a tedious task to pull hair out or cut it with a scissor.
You literally can spend more time removing pet hair from the brush roll than cleaning your home. It is something that can be a total waste of time.
Tangle-free brush roll
Bissell has addressed with the tangle-free brush roll system that prevents hair from wrapping around the brush.
One of the best places to verify this is through consumer reviews, and a lot of reviews did say that this feature works.
The think brush roll, along with the still bristles, makes it resistant to tangles.
You’ll see a video, later on, that’ll show you how much dirt this upright can pick up. And all of the hair, dander, and gunk go straight to the bin.
Cyclonic Pet Hair Spooling System
One of the most significant issues with cleaning pet hair or human hair would be wrapping around the outer filter shell. Even the Dyson V6 isn’t immune to hair staying inside the filter.
The result is you have to use your fingers to pull out hair. And doing this is pretty messy.
Bissell solves this issue by creating a system that separates dirt from hair. They call it the Cyclonic Pet Hair Spooling system.
It forces hair to clump together, creating one big ball of it. With hair clumped together, it creates mass, which easily falls when the trap door is open.
This feature makes it less messy to empty, and you don’t need to use your fingers to pick up hair.
Smart Seal Allergen System
Any pet hair cleaner should have a fully sealed system that traps pet hair, dander, and allergens.
And the 1650A has that thanks to the Smart Seal System that traps fine particles of dirt.
It also has the Febreze odor eliminator that keeps bad odors from seeping through the exhaust.
The Febreze post-motor filter isn’t washable, and you’ll have to replace it once or twice a year. Replacement filters are available in Amazon for around $20.
Quick Release Wand
You can also use this upright to clean above-floor areas like vents, upholstery, and even stairs thanks to the quick-release wand.
It also has an 8-foot hose that gives this some semblance of versatility. But don’t expect it to be as versatile as a canister vacuum.
Tools Included
This variant comes with three tools that you can attach to the quick-release wand.
These include:
- LED lighted crevice tool – has a bright LED headlight to help you track down dust and dirt in low light areas
- Pet turbo eraser tool – removes stubborn pet hair off upholstery
- 2 in 1 pet brush – helps remove embedded pet hair from furniture and the soft brush works excellent on delicate surfaces like drapes
Swivel Steering
Bissell also added swivel steering so you can quickly turn this 18-pound behemoth around furniture. But it won’t swivel as well as a Dyson upright.
Power Cord
It has a 30-foot power cord with cord hooks at the back for secure storage. Not as long as a Dyson or Shark but still decent and will work great on medium to large homes.
Cleaning Performance
This upright has a five-level height adjustment that makes it suitable on different floor types. However, this vacuum will be more effective on carpet than on hard surfaces.
Even if it has a brush off switch, the lackluster airflow makes it struggle on heavy bits of dirt like sand. I would not recommend this upright for homes with only hard floors.
The low clearance isn’t enough for large bits of dirt like Cheerios or Fruit loops, so you’ll have to raise the height, which makes it less effective on small debris.
And the mechanical dial doesn’t help since you’ll have to bend over constantly to make this adjustment.
It’s on the carpet where this Bissell shines. The stiff bristles allow it to clean carpet even with the below-average airflow thoroughly.
In deep cleaning tests, the Bissell 1650A scored a perfect 100% on medium-pile carpets. So if you’re looking for a mid-priced option for such, this model is a great alternative.
But if your home does not have any carpet, I’d recommend you get a Shark Navigator NV803 because the Duo Brush system will work better on this surface.
To see how this works in cleaning pet hair on a large area rug with a big mess, please watch this clip.
The amount of dirt it picked up was impressive. If you look at the amount of pet hair scattered on the rug, you’d consider it a huge mess.
Here’s a screenshot of the bin that’s full.
And if you look underneath the main cleaning head – there’s no hair wrapped around the brush.
Hair wrapped around a motorized brush is a big headache because it’s pretty tedious to cut it off. The Tangle-free brush roll feature works for this upright.
This video shows how it does on stairs using the crevice and mini turbo brush.
Compared to the test I shared with you above, the mini turbo brush didn’t do as well. It’s pretty clunky to use because it does not pivot back and forth.

Consumer Reviews
Consumers say that the tangle-free brush roll system works. Even after cleaning up tons of pet hair, the motorized brush is still free from pet hair.
But very long hair (longer than 2 inches) can wrap around the brush roll. It is a warning from one consumer. However, this wasn’t the case in other reviews.
Hair will not wrap up.
One woman mentioned that she had long hair and had almost given up before purchasing this. After using this, she only found a single strand of hair wrapped on the brush.
Most of the reviews you’ll see come from folks who have a lot of pets.
Suction and agitation are decent, which makes this a great option inside homes with lots of carpets. It won’t work as well on hard floors.
And if you’re transitioning from carpet to hard floor, you’ll need to turn a dial to adjust the height level of the floor. Not a big deal for most, but it can be a hassle.
Dyson still has better steering.
Compared to a Dyson, the swivel steering isn’t as maneuverable, and the cleaning path is narrower.
The hose is nice, but it could use a little more length according to reviews. But it makes it hard to use this to clean a tall flight of stairs without tipping over.
The wand isn’t adjustable – you can’t adjust the length, so the reach is an issue. You can
Overall, pet owners love how this vacuum works. It’s not messy to empty, but it’s pretty heavy.
Where can I buy this?
You can buy this upright vacuum from Amazon, and it is eligible for the free 2-day shipping if you enroll in Prime. Amazon also sells extended warranties up to 3 years if you need that extra peace of mind.
Please note that if you buy from this link, I’ll earn a commission but at no additional cost to you, so it’s a win-win for both of us.
To Wrap Up
This vacuum isn’t perfect, but it does clean pet hair on carpets. My favorite feature would be the tangle-free pet hair system that prevents most of the hair from wrapping up on the brush roll.
And if you’ve owned a vacuum with a brush roll and you live someone that has long hair, cleaning it can be tedious and frustrating.
Most reviews say that this feature works, but some said that long hair still wraps around. So it isn’t perfect, but if you saw the video I shared earlier, you’ll know why I’m pretty high on this.
Even with the amount of pet debris scattered, it was able to pick most of it up with almost nothing stuck on the brush.
The hose is a helpful add-on that helps it clean areas like upholstery, but it may not clean a whole flight of stairs. That would depend on how high your home’s stairs are.
If you’re looking for a mid-priced upright that can clean carpets thoroughly, this option is an excellent alternative to a Dyson upright.

Summary
Pet owners should have a long look at the Bissell 1650A Pet Hair Eraser. The tangle-free brush design works as advertised on short to medium length pet hair. It won’t be good as the Shark APEX with Zero-M when tackling long human hair, but for pet hair and litter, it will do the job well. The 5-level high adjustable system allows it to clean small to large-sized surface dirt as well as clean embedded dirt on thin and medium-pile carpet. It’s cheaper than the Dyson Ball Animal 2 and Shark Apex with Duo Clean which makes it an attractive option.

I’ve gone through two of these vacuums in two years. At first I loved everything about this machine, the suction how well it sucked up and cleaned fur and debris from bare floors and all of the features on this machine. At the one year mark, I noticed a reduction in its ability to clean what it normally would. After troubleshooting I found the problem was a serious break in the hose between the upright part of the vacuum and the floor piece. I contacted Bissell and they replaced it with a refurbished one. less than a year later the same has happened with the replaced machine they sent me. I’m livid at this point and refuse to buy another Bissell!
