How to choose a replacement Roomba battery?
Before choosing one, make sure to identify the Roomba model you have. This information is underneath the robot above the right wheel (check the photo below).
Once you have that information, hop on Amazon, eBay, or wherever your store of preference to purchase.
1. Check the model before buying
Before hitting the buy button, check and double-check if the battery is compatible with your Roomba robot. The last thing you want is to buy the wrong battery and waste time shipping it back to the seller.
I’ve listed the models each battery is compatible with, but it’s best to double-check on the merchant store itself.
2. Choose the right type
Two types of batteries are sold – a NiMH and a Li-ion battery. The Li-ion is a newer technology that takes less time to recharge and usually runs longer. It’s less prone to fading, easier to maintain, and lasts longer versus a NiMH battery.
But these are more expensive than an equivalent NiMH battery.
3. Get a new battery
Always opt for a brand-new battery. The appeal of a renewed (or refurbished) battery is cheaper, but its history is unknown, and for a critical part like the battery, it’s wise to spend more on a new component than going through buyer’s remorse.
Sparkole 5300 mAh
This option is one of the more popular Li-ion options and the least expensive. With its large capacity (5300 mAh), Sparklole claims it can run for up to four hours – more than any high-end robot alternatives like the Roomba S5 Max.
It has a 1000x recharge cycle and only a 1% self-discharge rate. The manufacturer claims it will run for up to 2 years without issues and has a 35-day money-back guarantee plus a 12-month limited warranty.
Melasta 5200 mAh
Another high-capacity option is the Melasta 5200 mAh. Melasta claims it will run between 1 to 2 hours on a Roomba 900 series and (up to) 3 hours on a 500, 600, 700, and 800 series.
The life cycle is impressive at 1,200 cycles with a built-in overcharge and overcurrent protection.
It comes with a 45-day money-back guarantee and a 12-month warranty.
Tenergy 5200 mAh
Rounding up the Li-ion replacement options is the Tenergy 5200 mAh. It’s the most expensive option but comes with some extras – 4 side brushes plus a brush-cleaning tool.
However, Tenergy doesn’t specify the number of charge cycles. It comes with a 12-month warranty, but no mention of a money-back guarantee.
Powerextra 3800 mAh
One of the more popular Ni-Mh options is the Powerextra 3800 mAh 14.4V replacement battery. This model is compatible with select Roomba 500, 600, 700, 800, and 900 series robots.
Along with the battery, you’ll also get four extra side brushes plus two screws.
It has built-in features against overcharging and over-discharging. Powerextra provides a 30-day return policy plus a 12-month warranty. They did not mention any run time claims, but several consumers say it lasted up to 2.5 hours.
Please follow the recommended procedures by the manufacturer if you choose this option. This includes running it until it’s discharged completely.
Moripilot 4050 mAh
Another popular NiMh battery option in this list is the Moripilot 4050 mAh. This battery is rated at 14.4 volts and lasts 1.5 to 3 hours.
Moripilot says that battery capacity will remain at 80% after 500 cycles.
One disadvantage of using a NiMh battery is the lower number of cycles. Assuming you use this robot once a day, it will retain 80% of its claimed run time after 1.5 years.
You’ll need to charge this battery for 12 hours before initial use. As a bonus, you’ll get two extra side brushes, two screws, and a brush-cleaning tool out of the box.
Authentic iRobot 1800 Li-ion
Now, let’s move to the original iRobot battery options for Roomba. First is the 1,800 mAh Li-ion battery.
This model is compatible with many Roomba models, including the 614, 675, 690, 890, and 960. Also, it’s the default battery you’ll get from the newer batches of the 675, 690, and 960.
Don’t let the low capacity discourage you from getting this model. It’s the safest alternative if you don’t want to risk damaging the robot with an inferior replacement battery.
XLife Extended Life Battery
XLife is another option for a high-capacity NiMH replacement battery from iRobot. Unfortunately, it’s a NiMH battery, but it’s an upgrade from the older NiCd used by older Roomba models.
It’s a 3000 mAh NiMH battery, but iRobot doesn’t specify how long it’ll run. That would depend on the Roomba model.
Also, it’s compatible with Roomba 500, 600, 700, and 800 series models, except for the 690 and 890.
caSino187 Replacement 1800 mAh
To round out this comparison, we’ll examine the caSino187 replacement batteries for the E and I-series robots.
Since these models are relatively new in the market, there aren’t much in replacement battery options.
The good news is that the E and I-Series robots utilize iRobot’s latest Li-ion batteries, which should last several years.
Can the Roomba battery be replaced?
Yes, the battery of all Roomba products is replaceable. You can find batteries even for ancient models like the 500 series on Amazon and eBay – that’s how popular iRobot products are.
One thing I like about Roomba products is the straightforward approach to replacing the battery.
For older models like the 690 or 675, you’ll have to remove the entire base plate to gain access to the battery.
Some variants, like the 980 or 960, are easier to replace since you only have to remove the battery cover.
How to replace a Roomba battery?
The excellent news is Roomba batteries are easy to replace. It involves removing a few screws and removing the base plate or battery cover to access the battery.
I’ve written guides based on the model. You can check these below.
- How to replace Roomba 690 battery
- How to replace Roomba 980 battery
- How to replace Roomba E5 battery
- How to replace Roomba I3 battery
The steps of the Roomba 690 are similar to the 614, 675, and other 600-series robots since they all have the same bolt pattern and battery placement—Ditto, with the 980 being similar to the 960.
How do I know if my Roomba needs a new battery?
There are some telltale signs of a dead Roomba battery – shorter run time than usual, indicator lights not illuminating, and low pick up.
If you encounter any of these signs, try to reset the battery by pressing the Home, Clean, and Spot buttons simultaneously, then charge the robot for up to 72 hours.
For owners with an older Roomba, like the earlier generation 650 series with the Ni-Cad batteries, you may want to upgrade to Li-ion batteries if the batteries are bad.
Roomba battery maintenance tips
While replacement Roomba batteries are not expensive, the costs will add up if you replace them often.
To ensure longevity, these are some of the best practices.
- Use the robot often: iRobot recommends using it daily to improve service life.
- Keep it plugged in: Keep the robot on the charging dock. These batteries have a built-in system that prevents overcharging and slows down to a trickle if it’s complete.
- Clean the robot regularly: Dirty components increase wear and force the robot to work harder, thus consuming more battery. Make sure to have a schedule for cleaning the robot’s various components.
- Charge the robot ASAP: Don’t leave the robot undercharged or drained. Doing so will accelerate wear and damage the battery. Charge the robot after every run and keep it fully charged.
- Remove the battery for extended idle periods: If you’re going on vacation and not using the robot for months, remove the battery from the robot. Another option would be turning off the robot, but I prefer removing the battery to be sure it doesn’t fully discharge. iRobot recommends detaching NiMH batteries from the robot for extended storage.
- Fully charge every six months: Piggy-backing on number 5, recharge the battery every six months to ensure optimal performance.
- Read instructions carefully for the initial charge: Some manufacturers require you to charge and discharge two to three times fully during the initial phase. The process will be different depending on the manufacturer. The point is to read the manual carefully before using it.
How much is a Roomba battery?
The cost will depend on the model and if you’re purchasing a Ni-Cad or Li-ion battery. Batteries for newer options like the E5, I7, or S9 will cost more.
For older options, like the 600 series, OEM replacement batteries will cost less. These usually cost below $70 for Li-ion variants and sometimes under $30 for Ni-Cad. But it’s just a ballpark figure, so it’s better to check the links to see the prices.
Roomba battery reset
One way to revive a dead battery is by doing a battery reset. For older models like the 600 and 900 series, it involves pressing the home + clean + spot buttons simultaneously for a few seconds.
Pressing these buttons will reset the robot to its factory settings. You must press the spot + home buttons to activate WIFI again.
If resetting doesn’t, it may be time to buy a new battery.
